Join ECU faculty members Dr. Sue Shon (ENG-350, Literature of/in Diasporas) and Dr. Alla Gadassik (MHIS-429, Topics in Film + Media Theory) in a public pedagogy series dedicated to films of migration and diaspora. Running every other Thursday this spring, each film is accompanied by an introduction and opportunities for audience discussion.
The third film in the series, Mother of George (2013, NIGERIA/USA, dir. Andrew Dosunmu) is a visually striking exploration of familial love and obligation in a diasporic urban community. Charged with the duty of producing an heir, newlywed Adenike finds her Yoruba community ties shifting from intimacy to isolation. An early career project for celebrated cinematographer Bradford Young, Mother of George is an inventive exploration of Black portraiture within the strictures of digital photographic media.
Each screening (including introduction and discussion) in this educational series runs 5:00pm - 8:00pm in the Reliance Theatre, with attendance free and open to the public.
