Join us for an engaging and insightful EDI Symposium for All Staff + Faculty on Wednesday, August 21st! This all-day event will cover essential topics like systemic barriers, power dynamics, personal boundaries, and bystander intervention.

Here's the detailed agenda:

9:00 AM - 9:30 AM: Registration and Breakfast (Room C3255, in-person)
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM: “Fostering Institutional Change” co-facilitated by Valeria Alcaraz and Todd Odgers (Room C3255, in-person)

This session is dedicated to understanding systemic challenges and learning how to drive institutional change. Participants will focus on identifying systemic inequities, analyzing biases, and developing strategies for fostering diversity and inclusion within institutions.

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Lunch

Stream A (Room B3155, In-Person):
12:30 PM - 4:30 PM: “Power is Everywhere” by Nic Wayara, Hook or Crook Consulting
In this session, participants will explore how power impacts team dynamics, team functioning and collaboration. Together, we will consider and explore the ways that power intersects with communication, and how we can use our power to empower others. We’ll define power, locate where it comes from and how power affects us and others.

Stream B (Room C3255, In person + Online):
12:30 PM - 2:45 PM: Boundaries and Communities of Care PeerNet BC
Utilizing decolonial, mutual aid, disability justice, and collective care frameworks, Lydia Luk and Athena Affan will guide participants through a process for developing a workplace culture of collective and community care. Participants will develop interpersonal connections, examine boundaries through a decolonial lens, explore Circle framework as a process for building a plan for collective care, identify individual relational strengths, and workplace needs, and increase awareness of principles of Disability Justice.
This session will be conducted only in-person setting.

2:45 PM - 3:00 PM: Coffee Break

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Bystander Intervention in the Workplace by Natalie Cone, Right to Be
Right To Be's bystander intervention training equips individuals with the skills to effectively intervene in instances of harassment or disrespect in the workplace. Through detailed instruction on the 5Ds of intervention, participants gain confidence in their ability to take action when witnessing inappropriate behavior. The training emphasizes the importance of creating a culture where bystanders feel empowered to intervene, ultimately contributing to a safer and more respectful work environment.

This session will be conducted online, the participants are welcome to stay in room C3255 and attend as a group, too.
