Tiny Inventions is Ru Kuwahata and Max Porter, an internationally award-winning, US-based puppet animation team. They will be sharing their animation work and ways of working.

Tiny Inventions is known for their animation films that focus on personal stories that elevate intimate and fantastical narratives, and their commercial work which embodies their hallmark warmth and style.

Kuwahata and Porter will bring a special focus on their experiences of integrating art-making into their lives, and their lives into their art-making. There are a myriad of ways in which their lives, work, and approach to working have evolved since having a baby, while continuing to make work that they care about.


Ru Kuwahata (Japan) and Max Porter (USA) are Oscar-nominated animation film directors living in Providence, USA. Known for their distinctive mixed-media narratives, they have directed and produced TV commercials, music videos, comics, interactive media and four independent films.

Working internationally, they have created projects with the Netherlands Institute for Animation Film and Ciclic Animation in France. Their films have screened in over 1000 festivals around the world, including Sundance Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand ISFF and Annecy Int Animated Film Festival, and have received over 200 international awards. Their most recent short, “Negative Space” (2017), was nominated for the 90th Academy Awards and Annie Awards, shortlisted for César Award, and has garnered 134 prizes. In addition, their work has been featured in numerous publications, including Variety, Colossal, IndieWire, Shots, Le Monde, and MovieMaker Magazine recently listed Max and Ru as part of their “25 screenwriters to watch 2018.”

Their first animated feature, Porcelain Birds, is being produced by Miyu Productions in France, with the support of Sundance Screenwriting Lab, Torino Script Lab, CNC, CICLIC, and l’Abbaye de Fontevraud.
