DDM Speakers: Giving Shape to Invisible Light
Please join us for this exciting talk with esteemed independent animator Koji Yamamura.
Animation gives form to a world that cannot be seen. The artist's unconscious and emotions emerge with movement, with a sense of existence and presentness. Koji will present the process of creating some of his works, showing how he has thought about and created them over the course of his long career.
Koji Yamamura is a Japanese independent animator born in 1964. Koji has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short, "Mt. Head" (2002), had 6 grand prizes and been selected for 100 Films for a Century of Animation. "Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor" (2007) has been awarded 6 grand prizes, with his films overall being awarded more than 130 prizes. "Mt. Head" and "Dozens of Norths" won the Grand Prix for short and feature film in Annecy and Ottawa. He has been selected as the 2nd place at 25 top short animated films directors over the last 25 years in 2021. He is also active as a picture book author for "Viva Vegetables!", "Parade" and over 100 titles. He was awarded the Prix Klingsor - for lifetime achievement, Biennial of Animation Bratislavathe, Kawakita Prize and Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts and received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2019. A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a sub-chairman of the Japan Animation Association and a member of the board of directors of ASIFA.
