DDM Speakers: Dr. Renata Leitão, Foundations for a Pluriversal Social Design

Join us for an online talk with design researcher Dr. Renata M. Leitão.
Renata Leitão will speak about principles and mindsets for social designers who aim to contribute to the blossoming of other worlds. She will be discussing two ideas: understanding culture as a project and desire-based design.
Bio
Dr. Renata M. Leitão is a Brazilian/Canadian social-focused design researcher with several years of experience in collaborative projects with Indigenous and marginalized. communities. She is an assistant professor in the department of Human Centered Design at Cornell University and an adjunct professor at OCAD University. Her research is at the intersection of critical design, participatory design, communication design, and design anthropology. Dr. Leitão holds a PhD in Environmental Design and a MASc in Design & Complexity (Université de Montréal). She co-founded and co-leads the Pluriversal Design Special Interest Group of the Design Research Society, a research network that aims to highlight multiple perspectives in design, especially from those oppressed by and excluded from mainstream narratives. Recently, Dr. Leitão chaired the virtual conference Pivot 2021: Dismantling/Reassembling – Tools for Alternative Futures.
