I have always taken influence and inspiration from anywhere; be it art, music, politics, cartoons, pop culture and literature, as well as observations of the world. My artwork and my approach is as varied as my subject matter. I see myself as a visual remix artist, reconfiguring my influences into visual representations using a combination of both traditional and digital media. With intricate details, my aim is to draw the viewer in close, engulfing them in a world of fragmented memories of a childhood past.

1991, Photography + Painting

Christian Dahlberg’s artwork centers on themes of urbanism and the built environment through the use of photography, painting, digital constructions, analog collage etc. Dahlberg will display works from his ongoing photo-documentation project Vancouver Neon which started as a school project in the 1980s at what was then known Emily Carr College of Art and Design.

1999, Printmaking + Painting

Darlene Clarke Hole has continued to be a devoted member of the Vancouver arts community both through the creation and collection of art and as a supportive member of several art institutions such as the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Clarke Hole continues her creative endeavours through an active painting practice. Her interests lie in exploring painting through an abstract expressionist style with emphasis on spontaneous and energetic mark making. Her most recent work, The Ocean Series, focuses on the exuberant exploration of colour and automatic mark making, mirroring the vast array of tones and textures seen in the ocean. Clarke Hole’s work is found in both private and corporate collections such as the Lions Gate Hospital Hope Centre, the Heritage Medical Clinic, Petrokleen Ltd., the University of Alberta, Institute for Sexual Minority Studies & Services and Malaspina Printmakers Archives.

When Darlene is not working in her West Vancouver studio she enjoys the spoils of the West Coast like Stand Up Paddle boarding, hiking and combing the beaches for treasures.

We are David and Kaoru Coates and we met at Emily Carr many years ago. After decades in the corporate design world running Ion Brand Design, we’re getting back to making art, and we’re having a lot of fun. All our work uses original design, photography and illustration. We lovingly hand screen and sew all our textiles at our home in North Vancouver. Our artwork is handcrafted from local recycled boards and recycled hockey sticks. We’re saving the world, one stick at a time.

David Crompton is a Canadian artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since graduating from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1999, Crompton has been screened and exhibited internationally in galleries, festivals and on media channels. Crompton’s work is included in the collection of the Marshall McLuhan Salon at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin and his projects have been awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council. He has published a number of photography-based publications, the most recent, Surrounded (2017), which is a collection of work from the previous five years into five discrete thematic volumes.

2017, Illustration

Elisabeth Belsher is a former high school science teacher turned artist who resides with her family in Coquitlam, BC. Belsher grew up in Burnaby and graduated from Simon Fraser University, after which she worked for the Vancouver School Board. She then moved to California, and after several years (and a lifetime of drawing), decided to take the plunge and switch careers. Belsher graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2017 with a BFA in Illustration. She was awarded the Governor General's Academic Medal for the highest academic standing in a Bachelor degree program.

Belsher works primarily in traditional media such as ink and watercolour. Her art is reminiscent of the Golden Age children's book illustration, which is defined by its sensitivity and precision. With her interest being divided between storytelling and nonfiction, Belsher is currently working on a series of science books for young readers.

1988, Fine Arts

Celebrated Vancouver artist, John Ferrie has earned international attention for his vibrantly expressive landscapes, florals and figurative work. Ferrie’s curvy, kinetic and sinuous lines complement his use of candy bright colours; he paints a radiant sensuality. His figurative pieces represent a queer parade of colourful characters and exaggerated personalities. Ferrie has been selected for key artist residencies in Paris, New York and Hong Kong as well as Rideau Hall in Ottawa. And exhibited in San Francisco, Miami and Seattle. In 2016, Ferrie was honoured to be awarded the TD Pride Legacy Award recognizing his long and continuing commitment to the LGBTQ2 community. When not in his studio, Ferrie can be found on his bike somewhere out in the city looking for his next composition with Vancouver sparkling in the distance.

Joni Taylor is an artist/illustrator living and working in Vancouver, BC. Taylor’s work is concerned with the idea of comic arts as a potent medium to disseminate a feminist message through humour and hyperbole. To this end, Taylor has published numerous zines and comics with a decided feminist agenda and is exploring 2D sculptural forms. Taylor holds a BFA in illustration (2014) and an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (2017).

1977, Printmaking

Lawrence Lowe is a practicing artist in Vancouver, British Columbia. He graduated in Print Media from Emily Carr College of Art + Design. Lowe’s main focus is ink drawing on various surfaces (paper, wood, stone, elk antler and deer and elk hide on drums) and relief printmaking. Known for his detailed ink drawings and prints of trees and images of Vancouver, the heart of Lowe’s work lies in the beauty of the detail found in the natural world. Hours spent with a pen or a carving tool take him inside himself where he finds a focused place of meditation, a place where he can create and be who he truly is. Trees from trips around the world fascinate Lowe: the Cypress and Olive of Italy, the Silk-Cotton of Cambodia, the Live Oak of New Orleans to name a few.

Lowe has taught Print Media extensively throughout British Columbia and taught Relief Printmaking at Emily Carr Institute in both Continuing Studies and Degree Programs.His studio is at 1000 Parker Street in East Vancouver.

Lisa Wick is a Vancouver-based graphic designer, illustrator and artist. She’s a creative who is innately curious, passionate and creates work in a space of exploration, play and enjoyment. As an artist, Wick’s paintings are inspired by the west coast and are an exploration of colour, shape and light. As a designer, she works across a variety of design disciplines including print, spatial, editorial, packaging and web, but specializes in brand development and illustration.

Wick studied at Emily Carr University of Art + Design where she earned a Bachelor of Design. Prior to Emily Carr, she studied at Langara College earning a Fine Arts Diploma.

2011, Industrial Design

Pat Christie is an Industrial Designer, Social Innovator, and Entrepreneur based in Vancouver, BC who specializes in locally sourced wood products, human-centered design, and architectural furniture. From an early age, he was encouraged by his parents to solve problems through making and repurposing as opposed to simply buying something new. He grew up in an environment where creating a sustainable life meant being a good host, being generous, and building relationships within the community. He is the founder / co-founder of several enterprises including SPACE, Daly Co. and the Yew Woodshop – All located on the 500 Block of Clark Drive in East Vancouver.

His creative practice is playful and draws inspiration from ordinary things found during adventures of everyday life. Pat’s work triggers the imagination by inviting the viewer to observe typically mundane shapes and forms in attractive arrangements that inspire curiosity and contemplation. His work is rendered through quality craftsmanship and conscious material considerations – sourced locally wherever possible. His compositions and installation work focus on the relational qualities amongst objects, with specific consideration to the host environment and viewing perspectives. He recognizes that his work participates in a larger ecosystem of things, relationships and systems, therefore he explores deeply into the context of a project before allowing ideas to materialize.

His current body of work is created from salvaged of Old Growth BC Western red cedar upwards of 800 years old from Vancouver Island, and younger cedar harvested from a private property in the Fraser Valley.
