Peggy Anderson "Continue Painting" Opportunity
This opportunity was established in 2013 by Vicki Schmolka, Gavin Anderson, and Susan Murray. It is designed to offer a non-credit continuing studies student with an interest in painting an additional painting course. The award is distributed through random draw.
Gordon Adaskin Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2002 by Jan Adaskin in memory of her husband, artist and alumnus, Gordon Adaskin. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Evangelos “Angie” Apostolides Scholarship
Angie Apostolides, owner of Beau Photo Supplies Inc., established this Photography scholarship in 2003 to demonstrate his support of Emily Carr Photography students. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Audain Foundation Entrance Scholarship
This entrance scholarship was established in 2004 by Michael Audain to provide tuition entrance scholarships for visual arts students that live within British Columbia outside the Greater Vancouver Regional District. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University entrance scholarship process.
Audain Travel Award
This award was established in 2020 by the Audain Foundation to support visual art education in British Columbia. This award will support and encourage a BFA and/or MFA student to travel to destinations of their choice to view artworks. This award is distributed through the Emily Carr University Academic Affairs office.
Unity Bainbridge Memorial Bursary
This bursary for students studying painting and/or drawing was established in 2017 by Deborah Ryan in memory of her mother, Unity Bainbridge. Unity was a Canadian artist and writer of poetry inspired by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast and its landscape. Unity’s talent was exhibited as a child and perfected as a student at the Vancouver School of Art (Emily Carr University) from which she graduated in 1936. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Alvin Balkind Memorial Scholarship
This endowed visual arts scholarship was established in 1997 by the late Abraham Rogatnick in loving memory of his partner, Alvin. Balkind, a gallerist, curator and art critic, was an influential leader in Vancouver’s art scene from the 1950s until his death in 1992. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Maple Batalia Memorial Scholarship for the Arts
This endowed entrance scholarship for South Asian-Canadian female students was established by the House of Kiran and further supported by the Batalia family and friends in memory of Maple Batalia. Maple was a gifted visual artist, actor, model, and aspiring doctor, who was tragically murdered in 2011. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University entrance scholarship process.
BC Hydro Aboriginal Awards
This endowed Aboriginal award was established in 2004 to demonstrate BC Hydro’s commitment to provide financial support for Aboriginal artists to develop their talents and realize their artistic goals. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University Aboriginal Awards process.
Judson Beaumont Bursary Memorial Fund
This bursary was established in 2020 by the family, friends and business associates in memory of alumnus, artist and designer Judson Beaumont. The bursary was established to provide Sculpture and Industrial Design students with the opportunity to pursue their love for the arts through their education, and discover a similar love, passion and enthusiasm for life. This bursary will be awarded through the Emily Carr University Bursary process.
Kerry Black Scholarship
This scholarship was established in anonymously 1992 through an annuity. It supports a student entering their third year of studies who exhibits exceptional technical and creative ability. The qualifying student will have a focus in either painting and/or Japanese pottery. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
W. G. Black Memorial Award
This endowed award was established in 1980 by James Griffiths Black in memory of William Griffiths Black with the intention of supporting painting students. It is awarded through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Elsie Boone Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1990 through the Estate of Elsie Boone, who wished to support the education of Aboriginal students. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University Aboriginal Awards process.
Toni Borschneck Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 1991 by Dr. A. G. Borschneck in memory of Toni Borschneck. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
The Claire Boudreau Memorial Fund
This fund was established in 2023 by The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada in recognition of Dr. Claire Boudreau, AIH, FRHSC, (18 August 1965 - 17 November 2020). Dr. Boudreau was a Canadian historian, genealogist, and Officer of Arms. The Fund provides four bursaries of $1,250 annually for students enrolled in either the Arts or Design (including media students) programs that demonstrate merit and financial need. The bursaries are open to both domestic and international students with a preference for Canadian students. Through the annual scholarship process, 50% of the awards are dedicated to Emily Carr's Indigenous, Black, or People of Colour students' community.
Pearley + Norine Brissenden Scholarship for Painting | Scholarship for Sculpture
These two scholarships were established in 1994 through the Vancouver Foundation with the intention of assisting and encouraging students in Painting and Sculpture. These awards are distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Ron + Martha Burnett Fellowship Award
This scholarship was established by Ray Schachter and Beverley Kort in 2009 in recognition of their close and personal relationship with Martha Burnett and Ron Burnett, President + Vice-Chancellor Emeritus of Emily Carr. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University graduate scholarship process.
Sophie Burnett Memorial
This endowed graduation award was established in 2005 by Dr. Yosef Wosk in memory of Sophie Burnett, the mother of President + Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, Dr. Ron Burnett. The award is given to a graduating student with the highest GPA in Media Arts.
Buschlen Mowatt Nichol Foundation Award
The Buschlen Mowatt Nichol Foundation Award was established in 2024 by the Buschlen Mowatt Nichol Foundation, whose focus is on lifelong learning, education, and the arts. It is the principal funder of the Vancouver Biennale’s open-air exhibitions and International Residency Program.
Barbara Cadario-Corinne Higgins Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2011 by painting student Barbara Cadario, in memory of her aunt, Corrine Higgins, a painter and quilter. The award is designed to support a female student completing her third year at Emily Carr with a concentration in Critical and Cultural Practice. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
John David Carr Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1998 by Betty Carr in loving memory of her husband, John David Carr. The award was also funded by John’s friends, family and coworkers. The annual award is given to a female student in the area of painting who can demonstrate both outstanding achievement and financial need. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Simon Chang Scholarships
These scholarships were established in 2010 by Simon Chang to award three outstanding third-year Emily Carr undergraduate students. These awards recognize a student from each visual arts, media arts, and design. The award recipients must agree to be featured in the Simon Chang Concepts newsletter. Simon Chang is one of Canada’s foremost fashion designers and one of Emily Carr’s most distinguished alumni. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Simon Chang Award
This endowed award was established in 1985 with the intention of being awarded to a third year Communication Design student who can demonstrate financial need who also has a high scholastic standing. Simon Chang is one of Canada’s foremost fashion designers and one of Emily Carr’s most distinguished alumni. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Christopher Foundation Scholarship
These awards were established in 1987 by the Christopher Foundation. As of 2013, the Christopher Foundation Scholarship distributes annual awards to students enrolled in foundation, design, media arts, visual arts, and graduate studies. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Coast Capital Savings Stand Tall Award for Youth in the Arts
This scholarship was established in 2018 by Coast Capital Savings through the Victoria Foundation. This grant recognizes a third- or fourth-year visual arts student. An Imagine Canada Caring Company, Coast Capital Savings invests in local communities, focusing on empowering and engaging youth. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Caroline Victoria Coldicutt Art Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2007 by Elizabeth and Thomas Coldicutt in memory of their beloved daughter, Caroline Victoria. This scholarship honours the artistic legacy of Caroline Victoria Coldicutt, an artist, poet, and student. This general scholarship is meant to encourage students to share their creativity in all forms of artistic expression. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Stephen A. Corcoran Memorial Fund
This bursary was established in 2013 by Joan Boxall in memory of her brother Stephen A. Corcoran. The award recognizes and supports students living with a medically diagnosed significant and chronic mental health condition/disorder who also have a financial need. It is distributed through a special selection committee.
Wilhelmina + Herbert Craner Fine Arts Bursary
This endowed bursary was established through the Estate of Wilhelmina Elizabeth Craner to provide bursaries to young people who wish to pursue studies in the fine art. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Credit Union Foundation of B.C. Bursary
This bursary was established in 1998 by the Credit Union Foundation of B.C. The recipients of this award are Canadian citizens residing in British Columbia who might otherwise have difficulty completing their studies due to financial hardship. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Lucas J. Croft Memorial Scholarship Fund
This award was established in 2021 by Ryan Ayoubi in honour of Lucas J. Croft, who passed away a month before his 30th birthday. This scholarship will provide an annual $1,000 scholarship to a student who is also experiencing financial need. The scholarship will be awarded through the Emily Carr University Scholarship process.
Francisco José Ortíz de la Cajiga Entrance Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2012 to provide entrance scholarships for Mexican international students. The fund was established by Francisco José Ortíz de la Cajiga’s parents to honour Francisco’s passion for life, art, travel, and education. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University entrance scholarship process.
Danica Imports Aboriginal Awards
This award was established by Danica Imports in 2021 to support Indigenous students enrolled in a credit Design program. It was created as part of Danica Import’s commitment to corporate responsibility by providing support for Indigenous students seeking a post-secondary education. This award will be distributed awarded through Emily Carr University’s Aboriginal Awards process.
Chris + David Dodge Aboriginal Awards
This endowed Aboriginal award was established in 2007 by Chris and David Dodge. The purpose of the award is to reward an Aboriginal student’s dedication to education who also has a demonstrated financial need. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University Aboriginal Awards process.
Ecological Design Graduation Award
This endowed graduation award was established in 2014 by Dr. Rory Wallace, Professor Emeritus, to support Bachelor of Design students. This juried award recognizes the importance of design in the crucial effort to remediate the ecological relationships of people and the planet. Beginning in 2019, the award will be distributed through the Emily Carr University graduation award process.
EJLB Industrial Design Scholarship
This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor to provide a scholarship for undergraduate Industrial Design students.
Emily Carr University Alumni Association Graduation Award for Community Engagement
This endowed graduation award recognizes students who place community at the centre of their creative practice, stand for a purpose that is bigger than themselves, and explore that which benefits others. The Emily Carr Alumni Association advocates for and celebrates alumni from all programs, years, and disciplines.
Emily Carr University Board of Governors Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 by members of the Emily Carr University Board of Governors, to encourage academic achievement. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Emily Carr University Employees Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2010 as a tribute to employees who passed away while working at Emily Carr, and funded by families, friends, and colleagues. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Glenna Evans Memorial Bursary Fund
This endowed bursary was established in 2011 in memory and in honour of Glenna Evans by her family and friends. The bursary’s intention is to provide an opportunity for talented students, regardless of their financial ability, to pursue their art education. Glenna Evans was a painting student from the West Coast and a well-loved member of the Emily Carr community who passed suddenly before completing her studies. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Gathie Falk Visual Arts Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2018 by Raymond Heung on behalf of the Y.P. Heung Foundation. It is intended to support an MFA student based on academic excellent, with special consideration to students demonstrating financial need or community involvement. Where possible, preference will be given to a student with a focus in painting or drawing. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University graduate studies scholarship process.
David Murton Foubister Memorial Aboriginal Award
This endowed Aboriginal award was established in 2018 by Vida Foubister in memory of her late brother, David Murton Foubister. David loved to sketch, paint, and draw in ink, and it was his dream to attend Emily Carr University. This Aboriginal Award recognizes students of Aboriginal or Indigenous ancestry, like David, with the intention of providing financial support and empowerment to the recipient. The recipient will be selected through the Emily Carr University Aboriginal awards process beginning in 2021.
Linda Fritzler Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 1981 by Mr. E. A. Fritzler and Family in memory of Linda Fritzler. This annual award is given to a student who demonstrates special talent and needs financial assistance. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Friends of Emily Carr Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 1988 by the volunteers known as the Friends of Emily Carr. The award is to acknowledge students showing exceptional dedication and promise. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Friends of Sculpture Award
This endowed award was initiated in 1989 by Diane Farris of the Diane Farris Gallery. The funds are awarded annually to a third-year sculpture student through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Jillian Blatchford Fuller Memorial Bursary
This endowed bursary was established in 1993 by George T. H. and Dr. Jane Fuller in memory of their daughter, Jillian Blatchford Fuller after her sudden passing. The award is given to a female student with financial needs. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Ian Gillespie Aboriginal Scholarships
These Aboriginal scholarships were created in 2017 by Ian Gillespie to support and acknowledge Aboriginal students. Students are recommended for these awards based on GPA and the students are selected through a committee comprised of the Director of Aboriginal Programs and President + Vice-Chancellor.
Ian Gillespie Design Scholarships
These scholarships were established in 2017 by Ian Gillespie to recognize both undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and the most promise. The awards are selected through a committee chaired by the VP Academic + Provost and the Dean of Design + Dynamic Media.
Cassidy Glaseman Memorial Fund
This bursary was established in 2020 by the family and friends of Cassidy Glaseman, an aspiring artist who tragically passed away in 2019, to create opportunities for other aspiring artists. This bursary will be awarded through the Emily Carr University Bursary process.
Glenmore Custom Print + Packaging Design Award
This award was established in 2019 by Glenmore Custom Print + Packaging. This award will be given to a student who exhibits innovative and well-resolved work in the area of packaging for paperboard, pressure sensitive labels, and/or shrink sleeves. Glenmore Custom Print + Packaging specializes in offset printing, and also offers digital, wide format and variable printing on state of the art equipment. The recipient will be selected through the Emily Carr University graduation award process.
Jason Godding Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2002 by Norman and Leslie Godding on behalf of the Godding Family in memory of their son, Jason Godding, an Emily Carr animation alumnus. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Don + Dana Goedbloed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2010 by Don and Dana Goedbloed to support and recognize students enrolled in the visual arts with a print media focus. This annual award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Mary Catherine Gordon Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1996 through the estate of Mary Catherine Gordon to support a student exhibiting talent, commitment, and financial need. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Jasbir Singh Grewal Memorial Bursary
This bursary was established by an anonymous donor in 2021. This bursary is dedicated for students who identify as Black, Indigenous or People of Colour and who are financially challenged. It is available to domestic and international students, with a preference for students identifying as female. This bursary will be awarded through the Emily Carr Bursary process.
Gwyn + Aileen Gunn Bursary
This endowed bursary was initiated in 2004 through a $1 million bequest from the Estate of Gwyneth Miriam Gunn with the purpose of awarding qualified students with financial need, preferably female. Each year, a portion of the earned interest will be designated to Indigenous students through the Emily Carr University Aboriginal awards process.
Jack Harman Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 2001 by Mr. Harman’s family and friends in honour of his contribution as an artist. The award is presented to a visual arts student and is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
The Peter Harnetty Scholarships Endowed Fund
This endowment was established in 2020 by Peter Harnetty to provide two scholarships, one for an undergraduate student entering second, third, or fourth year of their undergraduate program at Emily Carr University; and one for a student entering or already enrolled in a graduate program at Emily Carr. These scholarships will be awarded through Emily Carr’s undergraduate and graduate scholarship processes.
Highbury Foundation Art Fund Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2013 by the Highbury Foundation. It is intended to support a student demonstrating academic excellence. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Steven John Hodge Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 2002 by the Hodge Family in loving memory of their son and brother, Steven Hodge. Steven graduated from Emily Carr University in 1986, and had a passion for animation. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
I Like to Draw Award (Continuing Studies)
This award was established in 2019 by Lisa Nolan to provide an annual award to an Emily Carr Continuing Studies student who has completed a Drawing course, and wishes to continue their passion for drawing and artmaking. The recipient will be selected randomly by draw from eligible applicants.
Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour Student Award Fund
Funded by external and internal donors, this award was established as part of the University’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Action Plan. The bursaries are for students facing financial challenges and will be equally shared between Indigenous students and students who self-identify as Black or People of Colour. These awards are distributed through the Emily Carr Bursary and Aboriginal Awards processes.
International Computer Arts Award
This endowed scholarship initiated in 1992 by the International Computer Arts Society. The award will be given to a third year student demonstrating accomplishment in using computers for artistic purposes. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Marjorie + Howard Isman Award
This scholarship was established in 1993 and revised in 2013. It provides an award to the full time student who has completed their Foundation year with the highest GPA. It was revised by Pam and Michael Isman and Susan and Murray Isman in recognition of their parent’s 50thanniversary. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Walter Jaager Excellence in Painting Scholarship
This scholarship for excellence in painting was established by Evaleen Jaager Roy in honour of her father, Walter Jaager, a sought-after artist for many years within the Canadian Estonian community. As a refugee fleeing Estonia during the war, Walter never had the opportunity to pursue his dreams of attending University. This fund is intended to promote excellence in painting and to assist qualified painting students who might not otherwise be able to continue their artistic studies. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Saralee James Memorial Award
This graduation award was established in 1993 by the friends of Saralee James committee. The recipient of the award is a mature, female student who is enrolled in a degree program studying photography, animation, film/video + integrated media, or interactive social media arts. The student will be recognized as a political or social activist, a feminist, and someone who pushes boundaries in her work. The recipient is chosen by the Saralee James Memorial Award committee.
Audrey and Elsie Jang Fund - Emily Carr University of Art + Design
This endowed scholarship was established in 2003 by Elsie Jang and revised in 2019, when the funds were moved to the Vancouver Foundation. It was created to recognize a qualified third or fourth year student in the Design Program. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Linda Janitis Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 2006 by Laura Whitney in memory of Linda Janitis. This annual scholarship is awarded to a student in visual arts. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
John Jordan Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 1979 by the Jordan family in memory of their son and brother, John Jordan. John graduated in 1977 from what was then the Vancouver School of Art, and envisioned a career in art photography. The award is given to a full-time student in the area of Photography, and is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Thelma Ruck Keene Memorial Award for Ceramics by Circle Craft
This graduation award was established in 2003 by Circle Craft Co-operative to recognize a student who has focused on ceramics. The recipient is chosen by a jury based on their work in The Show. The recipient will also supply a ceramics piece for display at Circle Craft for the summer after the award is distributed.
John C. Kerr Chancellor Emeritus Awards
These awards were established in 2010 by John (Jake) Kerr, Emily Carr University’s first Chancellor. They are distributed annually to three outstanding Emily Carr students graduating from an undergraduate degree program. The award recipients are selected based upon students’ GPA and their work in The SHOW. There is a student selected from each of the following areas of study: Visual Arts, Media Arts, and Design. Recipients are selected through the Emily Carr University graduation award process.
John M. Koerner Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2014 by Lisa Birnie and his daughters in memory of John M. Koerner. John was a Vancouver artist and also taught at Emily Carr University and UBC. He was an original member of the West Coast Modern Art Movement and his work is held in many prestigious collections including the National Gallery of Canada. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Rudy Kovach Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of Rudy Kovach and his many accomplishments as a great artist, architect, and interior designer, by his friends and family. The award recognizes a student in the design program. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Tina Ingrid Lepik Chandler Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established by Constantine (Gus) Klemos to honour Tina's memory in 2021. It will provide a scholarship for an Emily Carr student(s) which will be distributed through the Emily Carr undergraduate scholarship process.
Ben and Sally Lim Bursary
This endowed bursary was established in 2021 by Sally Lim, and endowed at the Vancouver Foundation with the intention of providing bursary support to students in financial need. The arts and education are part of the Lim family heritage, and they wish to make a meaningful impact on society through this bursary. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University Bursary process.
London Drugs Scholarship Endowment
This endowed scholarship was established in 2008 by London Drugs, as part of the company’s mandate to give back to the communities they serve with one of their interests being the arts. The funds are distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Donna + Helmut Meisl Bursary
This endowed bursary was initiated in 2016 by Donna and Helmut Meisl. Donna Meisl is an artist with a bachelor of Fine Arts from the California College of the Arts, with majors in Drawing and Sculpture. The Meisls have an interest in traditional art methods and wish to support emerging artists through this bursary. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Moment Factory Graduation Award
This graduation award was established in 2017 by Moment Factory to recognize a deserving and qualified multidisciplinary artist that demonstrates creativity, originality, and clarity in their presentation and ideas, who exhibits research in innovation, and whose work is both multimedia based with multisensory design. The eligibility and recipient is determined by a jury of industry professionals.
Motion Picture Technicians IATSE Local 891 Bursary
This bursary was established in 2004 by the Motion Pictures Technicians I.A.T.S.E. Local 891. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Marion V. Murray Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 1991 through the estate of Marion V. Murray. The scholarship is open to students in all disciplines. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Native Northwest Reconciliation Fund Aboriginal Awards
This award was established by Larry Garfinkel on behalf of The Native Northwest Reconciliation Fund in 2021 to provide support for Indigenous students seeking a post-secondary education. The Native Northwest Reconciliation Fund recognizes that increased knowledge promotes human rights, social justice and anti-racism. This award will be distributed through Emily Carr University’s Aboriginal Awards process.
Hitoshi Nishi Painting Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established by the Estate of Hitoshi Nishi in 2021. It is dedicated to an undergraduate painting major, and will be distributed through the Emily Carr scholarship process. Where possible, this scholarship will be awarded to a student who has self-identified as being Indigenous, Black or a Person of Colour.
North-West Ceramic Foundation
This endowed scholarship was established in 2000 by the North West Ceramics Foundation. The scholarship is for students who are entering their third or fourth year and are majoring in ceramics. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Nudelman Collection Award
These awards were established in 2014 by the Nudelman family to support and acknowledge the artistic excellence of graduating visual arts students. These awards are selected based on students’ work in The Show, and hand-selected by the Nudelman family. Students who agree to the acquisition have their work become part of the Nudelman Collection.
Leo Obstbaum Memorial Award
This endowed award was established in 2010 by VANOC in memory of Leo Obstbaum, to provide and annual award to a student enrolled in Communication Design. Obstbaum was an influential member of the design community and the award is intended to support and foster the same kind of passion Lee demonstrated throughout his career. The scholarship is awarded through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Ocean Concrete Scholarship Endowment
This endowed scholarship was initiated in 1999 by Ocean Construction Supplies Limited. It recognizes a student studying industrial design. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Andrew Oksakovsky + Dr. Emily Goetz Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 by Dr. Emily Goetz in loving memory of her late husband, who was passionate collector of art who loved to discover the works of talented young artists. Dr. Goetz, a Counselling Psychologist and professional jazz and folk singer who passed away in 2015, left her estate to Emily Carr University. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.

George + Penny Pedersen Aboriginal Award
This endowed Aboriginal award was established in 2005 by Drs. George and Penny Pedersen to support and acknowledge Aboriginal students. Dr. George Pedersen is an Emily Carr Capital Campaign Executive Member and former Emily Carr University Board Chair. Dr. Penny Pedersen was a teacher and administrator in the North Vancouver School District. The Pedersen family has a long-term commitment to providing support to Aboriginal students seeking a post-secondary education. Helen Pitt Bursary for Fine Arts Award
This bursary was established in 2016 through the Helen Pitt fund at the Vancouver Foundation with the intention of supporting visual arts undergraduate students. Preference is given to students who were from School District No. 22 (Vernon, Lumby, Coldstream, Cherryville, and Lavington). The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.

This scholarship was established in 2017 by Geoff and Janet Plant to support students who excel academically and have a demonstrated financial need. Geoff Plant is the second Chancellor of Emily Carr University. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Mary Plumb Blade Award
This endowed graduation award was initiated in 1995 by the Mary Plumb Blade Committee, a group of Mary’s friends and colleagues. The award is given to a graduating student whose discipline is in either painting or printmaking. The award will be selected by an external jury and based on the work exhibited in The Show.
Geoff Rees Memorial Fund
This fund was established by The Family of Geoff Rees in 2021 to honour Geoff’s legacy as an artist, educator and beloved family member. His family wishes to extend Geoff’s expression of self through art and his interest in helping students find their own similar self-expression by offering financial assistance through scholarships and bursaries in his name. The funds will be awarded through the Emily Carr Graduate Studies Scholarship and Bursary processes.
Bill Reid Visual Arts Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2018 by the Y.P. Heung Foundation. The scholarship supports an undergraduate student based on academic excellent, with special consideration to students demonstrating financial need or community involvement, and who also have a focus in painting or drawing. Where possible, preference will be given to an Aboriginal student. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Rennie Foundation Bursary
This endowed bursary was established in 2006 by Bob Rennie to provide bursary funding to students demonstrating financial need. Bob Rennie is a Vancouver developer with a passion for contemporary art, who is known for his generous support of artists and art institutions in Vancouver and beyond. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Chick Rice Award for Excellence in Photography
This graduation award for photography was established in 2016 by photographer, alum and retired Emily Carr faculty, Chick Rice. Intended to nurture and support emerging photographers who exhibit their work in The Show, the graduation exhibition piece must demonstrate excellent conception, production, and execution. The recipient is selected through the Emily Carr University graduation award process.
Rix Family Awards
This endowed award was established in 2007 by the Rix Family Foundation to acknowledge and support Aboriginal students who clearly demonstrate a commitment to achieving their educational goals and making a difference in their community. The Rix family are active supporters of the arts community, including the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Vancouver Opera. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University Aboriginal Awards process.
Maisie Anne Robertson Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 by the Robertson Family in memory of Maisie Anne Robertson. This award is given to a visual arts student and is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Richard Robinson Memorial Bursary
This endowed bursary was established in 2017 by Joan and Bill Humphries in memory of Richard (Rick) Robinson, a vital member of the Emily Carr community from 1974 until his passing in 2006. Rick’s sincerity, integrity and sensitivity made him a friend to all and a confidante to many. As dedicated as Rick was to his co-workers and students, he was also a kind and loving husband, father, brother and son. The award will be distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process beginning in 2020.
Abraham J. Rogatnick Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1997 by Abraham Rogatnick to recognize academic achievement by an industrial design student. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Tom Rowe Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2017 by loving wife Vicki Gabereau, and Tom’s friends and associates. Tom was a film and television executive who attended Emily Carr University, and was a former member of the Emily Carr University Foundation Board. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Bob Scarabelli Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 2004 through donations from family, friends, and new media associates after Scarabelli’s sudden passing. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Marianna Schmidt Memorial Bursary
This bursary was established in 2016 through the Estate of Marianna Schmidt. The bursary is intended to support and acknowledge visual arts students. Marianna Schmidt was born in Nagybecskerek, Hungary and attended the Vancouver School of Art between 1960 and 1964. Marianna’s practice included painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, etching, lithography, computer art, plastic sculpture, and photography. Her internationally exhibited work received numerous accolades. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.
Jack + Doris Shadbolt Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1997 by Jack and Doris Shadbolt to recognize and support a talented painting student in the visual arts program. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.

Gordon + Marion Smith Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1995 by Gordon and Marion Smith. Gordon is one of Emily Carr University’s most esteemed and beloved alumni. He and Marion were fixtures in the Vancouver art community before her passing. The scholarship is intended to support a student enrolled in visual arts. This endowed scholarship was established in 2009 on the occasion of Gordon Smith’s 90thbirthday through contributions by Mr. Smith’s friends and fans. This endowed scholarship was established in 2004 by the Estate of Norma Ellen Sorensen. This award is intended to support and recognize a student with a focus in painting. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.

Jocelyn Tracey Memorial Bursary
This endowed bursary was established in 2008 by Sheila Tracey in memory of her sister, Jocelyn Tracey. Jocelyn Tracey studied photography at Emily Carr in 1985 and was one of the first student monitors to be hired in the photography department. Jocelyn had an eye for learning and a never ending appetite for learning. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University bursary process.

Van Gogh Designs Furniture + Wood Design Graduation Award
This graduation award was established in 2018 Van Gogh Designs with the objective of providing an Industrial Design student working in Wood Design a graduation award. Preference will be giving to furniture designers. The recipient will be chosen by an independent jury of design professionals based on students’ work in The Show. Van Gogh Designs has been a leading manufacturer of upholstered furniture in Canada and Western United States for 25 years.

This entrance scholarship was established in 2015 by artist, alumna and faculty Renée Van Halm and Pietro Widmer to support a student entering the undergraduate Foundation program. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University entrance scholarship process.

Vancouver Biennale "Art Attack" Award
The Vancouver Biennale “Art Attack” Award was originally established by Kirsten Larsen as the Vancouver Art Attack Award for Excellence in Visual Art in 2014 and re-established by Larsen in 2018 to aid in the pursuit of artistic dreams. In 2024, In appreciation of Kirsten Larsen’s support of community arts programming, her founding of the Vancouver Biennale Young Ambassadors group, and her ongoing support of the Vancouver Biennale’s mandate and programming, the Vancouver Biennale created the Vancouver Biennale “Art Attack” Award to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the original “Art Attack” Award and the hundredth anniversary of Emily Carr.
Barbara + Arne Vengshoel Scholarship and Bursary Endowment
Established in 2005, these endowed awards recognize Canadian undergraduate and graduate students, as well as students facing financial challenges. Barbara Vengshoel hails from Ontario, Canada where she acquired her love of contemporary art from her father, who was a distinguished painter. Her husband Arne was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of mediums, including wood and glass. Judith Warren Painting Award
This annual graduation award was established in 2019 by Judith Warren's children, family and friends in tribute to her memory. The “Fund” will provide an annual graduation award to an undergraduate visual arts student whose graduation piece is in the medium of watercolour, selected by an external jury arts professionals through the Emily Carr University Graduation Award process.
Robert Weghsteen Memorial Graduate Scholarship
This scholarship was initiated in 2017 by Joanne Weghsteen in memory of her husband, Robert Weghsteen. Robert Weghsteen previously taught at the Vancouver School of Art and was a prolific ceramist. Robert’s work graces the walls across Canada in public spaces and private homes. Joanne created the award with the hope of supporting serious young artists to develop their creativity. West Vancouver Visual Arts Society
This endowed scholarship was established to recognize and support students, preferably from North Vancouver or West Vancouver who are currently enrolled in painting. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Ute Wilder Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2016 Ute Wilder’s children in her memory. Ute was a great artist, an enthusiastic mentor, and was always eager to share her knowledge. The award is intended to support and recognize a student, with preference given to students from Northern British Columbia. This award allows Ute to continue the arts as a lasting legacy to her passion. The award is distributed through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Lloyd Williams Award
This endowed award was established in 2012 through the estate of Lloyd Williams to provide financial support to students originating from the Chilcotin region for the duration of their enrolment at Emily Carr University. Lloyd Williams was an artist since his mid-20s. He was self-taught and his practice combined sculpture and painting. This scholarship is awarded through the Emily Carr University scholarship process.
Wood Co-Op / Forestry Innovation Investment Innovation in Wood Industrial Design Graduation Award
This endowed graduation award was established in 2011 by The Wood Co-op and Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd to support the careers of graduating students from the Industrial Design program based on their commitment to innovative wood-based design. Yau Family Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2018 by the Yau Family Foundation to provide two annual MFA scholarships. The Yau Family Foundation was established to support higher education in a number of disciplines ranging from science to the arts. This scholarship was established in 2020 by the Yau Family Foundation to provide two annual MFA scholarships for students to conduct research internationally, and benefit from mentorship opportunities with partner institutions. Y. P. Heung Foundation Post-Secondary Awards
These awards were established in 2019 by the Y. P. Heung Foundation to provide eight undergraduate scholarships and two indigenous awards for full-time students with Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status in their first year of studies at Emily Carr University. The awards will recognize academic excellence, community engagement and financial need, with the intention to encourage and support first year students, help close the gap of inequality, and enhance the economic well-being of the greater community.
Yaxkasei (William Callaghan) Memorial Award
This endowed Aboriginal award was established in 2017 by Gaye Fowler and John Wertschek in memory of Yaxkasei. Yaxkasei, whose name means “can see a long way” was a third year Emily Carr student at the time of his tragic passing. He touched many lives in his short 33 years, including his four nephews, and was a beloved leader and mentor to Aboriginal students. This award is designed to support students of Aboriginal ancestry wishing to enroll in a credit summer program course. Students apply for the award through the Aboriginal Program Director.
