From AgentC Projects:

Chun Hua Catherine Dong brings her politically charged durational performance to Surrey Art Gallery and Island Studio.

We live in increasingly complicated political times. Our bodies are compromised and controlled by multiple governing forces. Through her performative work, Chinese-born, Montreal-based artist Chun Hua Catherine Dong explores the intricacies of these relations through the use of repetitive gesture, interaction, and duration. Time itself becomes a medium for exploring and expressing the nature of these relations. AgentC Projects, in partnership with Surrey Art Gallery, are thrilled to bring Chun Hua Catherine Dong back to Vancouver for a performance and artist residency.

Dong will be performing a new work titled The Undocumented at the April 14 opening of Surrey Art Gallery’s spring exhibitions Flow: Works from the Permanent Collection; Elizabeth Hollick: Body Politic, and Ben Bogart: Watching and Dreaming. The event runs from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at Surrey Art Gallery (13750 88 Ave in Bear Creek Park.) The Undocumented is an extension of themes Dong investigates in her performance The Wall, which Dong describes as “…seek[ing] intersections created by experiences of immigration and globalization, it raises awareness of our current global migration crisis, looking beyond national borders and our shared responsibilities as citizens of the world, and how we continue to see ourselves in each other, and how we create a space that is grounded in inclusiveness and respect for the dignity and freedom we all deserve.”

Dong will also be an artist-in-residence at Island Studio (1551 Duranleau St. Granville Island) April 4-11 where she will be continuing data collection for her participatory, research-based performance The Arrival that examines identity, place, and belonging through languages and gestures.

In her field research, Dong records the voices of her collaborators saying, “Where are you from?” with different tones and emotions. She also invites people who are unable to meet with her in person to participate by recording their own voices and sending their recordings to her. Dong’s performance component of this work incorporates these recordings, salt, and paper boats as a response to her research.

Chun Hua Catherine Dong will be gathering more voices as part of her residency at Island Studio. Please visit AgentCProjects.com for more information about how you can participate.
