T2200 - Claiming Employment Expenses
Claiming Home Office Expenses for Employees
The Canada Revenue Agency has discontinued the T2200 short form for the 2023 taxation year. If you require a T2200 detailed form, please work with your department manager to complete the form.
Eligibility Criteria
To claim the actual expenses you paid for working from home, you must meet all of the following conditions:
You were required to work from home. This does not need to be part of your employment contract, but it should be a verbal or written agreement. For 2023, if you have voluntarily entered into a formal telework arrangement with your supervisor, you are considered to have been required to work from home.
You were required to pay for expenses related to the workspace in your home. You cannot claim any expenses that were or will be reimbursed by the university.
Your workspace is where you mainly (more than 50% of the time) work for a period of at least four consecutive weeks in the year. If you have more than one eligible period during the year, you can claim your expenses for each period, OR you only use the workspace to earn employment income.
Your expenses are used directly in your work.
If you meet the above criteria, you are eligible to receive a signed T2200. Please work with your department manager to complete the form. Keep the signed T2200 with your tax records.
Additional information is available on the CRA website. Note that while the university can provide information, we cannot provide tax advice. Personal financial or tax questions should be directed to a financial advisor.
