Student Tax Forms

T2202's are tuition tax receipts issued to students aged 16 years and older studying at designated educational institutions in Canada, and having paid more than $100 in eligible tuition fees and applicable mandatory fees for qualifying courses in the previous calendar year (January-December). The forms show the amount of tuition and applicable fees paid during a tax year that are eligible to claim on the income tax return.

Students with a disability

A student is also considered a full-time student if they were enrolled in a qualifying educational program and one of the following situations apply:

• you attended part-time and are eligible for the disability tax credit for the year
• you attended part-time and had, in the year, a mental or physical impairment certified in a letter by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, optometrist, audiologist, occupational therapist, psychologist, physiotherapist, or speech language pathologist, but not eligible for the disability tax credit.
  

The educational institution is certifying that the student, although enrolled on a part-time basis, is taking courses from a qualifying educational program.

International Students

International students studying in Canada my have to file a Canadian income tax return. If you have earned income in Canada, you will need to file a tax return and submit your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or Individual Tax Number (ITN) to ECU on Self-Service.

Form 1098-T

ECU does not issue Form 1098-T. As a Canadian institution, ECU only provides Canadian federal tax receipts - T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate. For US tax filing, please use the T2202 form.

Continuing Studies Students

Continuing Studies students who only registered in a course/courses where the duration was less than 3 consecutive weeks will not be eligible for a T2202.

Students in the Teens programs who were under 16 years old at the end of the previous calendar year will not be eligible for a T2202 that year.

If you received a bursary, scholarship, award, or tuition waiver, you will be issued a T4A if the categories combined totals $500 or more. The amount on the T4A shows the total funding received in the tax year, which may not equal the total received for the academic year.

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) or Individual Tax Numbers (ITN) to be included on T2202 and T4A forms and filed with the CRA. The ITN is for individuals who are not eligible for a SIN and are considered a non-resident for tax purposes.

Subsection 237(1) of the Income Tax Act requires that you provide your SIN/ITN, upon request, to the preparer of the tax information slip. More information on this requirement can be found on the CRA website or look up ‘Subsection 237(1) CRA’ on your web browser.

Submitting your SIN or ITN to ECU

The SIN/ITN will be stored securely and used for federally approved purposes.

If you have not provided your SIN/ITN as part of your student record previously, you can enter it online via Self-Service. You only need to provide it once. As the CRA does not require T2202s to be amended for SIN/ITN updates after filing, ECU will not be amending and resubmitting tax forms after they have been issued and submitted to the CRA. However, please continue to submit your SIN/ITN on Self-Service as this information will be needed for subsequent years' tax forms. For security reasons, please do not email your SIN/ITN to the University.

Submit your SIN/ITN by following the steps below:

1. Log into your Self-Service account.
   1. Forgot your Self-Service password or need login assistance? Follow these instructions. If you need further login assistance, submit a ticket to ITS Help Desk.
2. Within the main menu, select Social Insurance Number (SIN) Information.
3. If there is an existing number on file, only the last 3 digits will be shown. If these are not the last 3 digits of your SIN/ITN, or if it needs to be updated, contact the respective emails below to have the SIN field reset and proceed to the next step. For security reasons, please do not submit your SIN/ITN over email.
   1. Undergraduate + Graduate students, contact reghelp@ecuad.ca
   2. Continuing Studies students, contact csreghelp@ecuad.ca
4. If you have not provided a SIN/ITN previously:
   1. Select edit (pencil icon).
   2. In the SIN box, enter your nine-digit SIN/ITN. Note: confirm that you entered the information correctly. Once submitted, changes will need to be made by contacting reghelp@ecuad.ca or csreghelp@ecuad.ca (see Step 3).
   3. Click the "Submit SIN" button. When submitted, a confirmation will appear indicating that your number has been updated.

Continuing Studies Students

I am an International student. Am I required to provide a SIN?

If you are a non-resident of Canada, have not earned income, and do not need to files taxes, you do not need to provide a SIN or ITN.

If you have earned income in Canada and are filing a Canadian income tax return, you are required to submit a SIN or ITN. Please refer to this Government of Canada page for more information: Are You an International Student Studying in Canada?

If you live in Canada or the United States, please ensure that your address on our records is a Canadian or US address.

The active address that we have on record for you at the time of preparation of the tax forms will be used on your T2202 and T4A tax forms. These forms will be available on Self-Service by February 28^th each year for the previous calendar year, and will not be mailed out. As the CRA does not require address changes to be amended on tax forms after submission, ECU will not be amending and refiling T2202 and T4As for address updates. If the current address on file is not a Canadian or US address, or, if it is incorrect, please update your information immediately in Self-Service.
